KH-TAT Injection Molding Services

How Custom Plastic Injection Molding Works

The plastic injection molding process requires an injection molding machine, plastic raw material, and a machined mold. Plastic raw material is heated and melted in the injection unit, injected into the mold (typically machined from steel or aluminum), and cooled to form the final plastic part. At KH-TAT, we first review your injection molding quote and part manufacturability online, then communicate with you to ensure specifications, lead times, and pricing meet project requirements. We use your provided 3D CAD model to manufacture high-quality injection molds through CNC machining. After the mold is built, samples (T1) are shipped for your review. After the mold is refined and approved, full production begins.

Through this process, we can manufacture everything from the smallest medical devices to large automotive, aerospace, and defense components.

How Custom Plastic Injection Molding Works

The plastic injection molding process requires an injection molding machine, raw plastic material, and a machined mold. The raw plastic material is first melted and then injected into the mold—most often machined from steel or aluminum—where it cools and solidifies into the final plastic part, and then finally ejected from the machine.

At Xometry, we can review your injection molding project for manufacturability and consult with you to ensure your specifications, lead time, and price fit your needs. We use your 3D CAD to CNC machine a high-quality injection mold. Once tooling is created, Xometry sends samples (T1) for approval. Once samples are approved, Xometry begins production. We use this process to mold everything from the smallest medical insert up to large automotive, aerospace, and defense parts.

Injection Mold Surface Finish & Post-Processing Options

Mold manufacturers select surface finish, typically SPI B-2, depending on geometry and draft angle. Internal non-cosmetic surfaces typically remain as-machined.

The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) Surface Finish grades range from diamond high polish to stone low polish, including: SPI A-1, A-2, A-3; SPI B-1, B-2, B-3; SPI C-1, C-2, C-3; SPI D-1, D-2, D-3.

Offers various texture effects including matte, swirl, line and pattern finishes. Commonly used textures include MoldTech MT11010, MT11020, MT11030, with other custom textures also available.

VDI 3400 surface finish refers to the mold surface texture standard established by the German Engineers' Association, primarily achieved through EDM, producing matte surfaces from fine to rough.

Parts receive no secondary polishing or grinding, with machining marks retained on the surface.

Most common standard threaded inserts can be installed, including UNF and metric sizes.

Injection Molding FAQ

Injection molding is widely used in aerospace, medical devices, consumer products, energy, electronics, automotive, robotics, toys and many other industries.

Injection molding is a manufacturing process where plastic or metal material is injected into a mold and the finished part is removed after cooling. 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process that builds parts layer by layer through deposition, sintering and other methods.

After receiving the order, manufacturing engineers review the work instructions, then assign a project manager, identify suitable manufacturing partners, and prepare a comprehensive DFM/PEG report for approval. Mold manufacturing begins after approval, T1 samples are produced and sent for review. After T1 sample approval, full production of remaining parts begins.

At KH-TAT, customers own their injection molds! After production is complete, the mold remains at the factory. If needed, the mold can be shipped to you, with associated shipping and packaging costs borne by you. If unsure whether the mold is compatible with your equipment, our engineers will assist with verification.

Yes, multiple colors can be used even in the same order! However, when multiple colors are used in one order, an additional color change fee will apply.
