CNC Milling Tolerances & Standards

Description General Tolerance or Standard

Maximum Part Size

Milled parts up to 80” x 48” x 24” (2,032 x 1,219 x 610 mm).

Distance Dimensions

For features of size (Length, width, height, diameter) and location (position, concentricity, symmetry): ±.005”.

Orientation and Form Dimensions

±.005" and angularity of 1/2 degree for parts 0-12". For 24" and beyond, please consult Xometry's Manufacturing Standards.

Standard Tolerances

Tolerances on metals will be held to ±.005" (±0.127 mm) in accordance with ISO 2768 unless otherwise specified. Plastics and composites are held to ±0.010”.

Precision Tolerances

Xometry can manufacture and inspect to tight tolerances, including sub ±.001" tolerances, per your drawing specifications and GD&T callouts.

Minimum Feature Size

0.020” (0.50 mm). This may vary depending on part geometry and chosen material.

Threads and Tapped Holes

Xometry can accommodate any standard thread size. We can also machine custom threads; these will require a manual quote review.

Surface Finish

The standard finish is as-machined with a surface roughness of 125 μin Ra or better. Additional finishing options can be specified when getting a quote.

Edge Condition

Sharp edges will be broken and deburred by default. Critical edges that must be left sharp should be noted and specified on a print.

Please check out Xometry's Manufacturing Standards for more information on tolerances per process. Unless we have agreed to other tolerances in your Quote, we will work to achieve and hold the tolerances noted.

Overview: What is CNC Milling?

CNC Milling Machine Basics
CNC milling machines are automated cutting devices that remove excess material through a rotating spindle head. Mills come in various sizes and axis configurations, primarily used for machining harder metals, but also compatible with materials ranging from plastics and aluminum to stainless steel and titanium.

How CNC Milling Works
CNC millingBed excels at hardMaterialsPerforms contour machining。Like other CNC machines,Mill byCAMSoftware-generatedGCode-controlled。GCode instructions precisely control tool head position、Spindle Speed、Cutting Depth、Workpiece motion and other speeds、Feed rates and coordination parameters。Code complexity depends on the number of mill axes。
Mills can also be used for softMaterialsContour Cutting,But withCNC EngravingLower cost-effectiveness compared to machines。The main difference between the two is:CNC EngravingWorkpiece stationary during machining,Engraving head rotates around workpiece;WhileCNC millingBed can move both tool head and workpiece。CNC millingBed primarily for industrial manufacturing,CNC EngravingMachines are more commonly used for low-volume manufacturing like woodworking。

Overview: What is CNC Milling?

Types of CNC Mills

3-axis CNC milling machines are the most widely used type, utilizing movement in X, Y, and Z directions for various machining tasks.

4-axis milling machines add rotational capability around a vertical axis, allowing the workpiece to be moved for more continuous machining and improving efficiency for complex parts.

5-axis milling machines add rotation to three linear axesAdds two rotational axes to the linear axis base,Five sides can be machined on one machine without removing the workpiece。The workpiece rotates while the spindle head moves around it,Suitable for complex geometries。This type of equipment is larger,Cost is correspondingly higher。

Other Advantages of CNC Milling

CNC milling machines are designed for high-precision manufacturing and high repeatability, suitable for rapid prototyping and production needs from low to high volume. Mills can process various materials, from basic aluminum and plastics to high-performance materials like titanium, handling nearly all machining tasks.
